Cedar Breaks National Monument

Cedar Breaks National Monument Located nearest Pinewoods Resort, Cedar Breaks is well worth the twenty minute drive. From four viewpoints on Hwy. 148 the scenery opens up into a bowl of red rock spires; an amphitheater 2,500 ft. deep and three miles long. The cliffs fold and twist along the rim, which is over 10,300 ft. above sea level. Stands of spruce, firs and aspens grow right out of the cliff face, adding to the beauty of the monument, especially in September when the leaves change. Similar colors and formations lead some to call it a mini-Bryce Canyon. The indigenous people called this natural wonder "the Circle of Painted Cliffs."

Activities
The Cedar Breaks Visitor Center is open from late May to mid-October. Nature walks are given during the summer months on Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 a.m., weather permitting. There are two main Utah hiking trails; the Spectra Point/Ramparts trail is a two to four mile round trip, and the Alpine Pond trail is a two mile loop. Because of the high elevation at the monument, these hikes are not recommended for persons with health problems. Nearby is the Bristlecone Pine trail, which leads to a stand of one of the world's oldest living tree species. The visitor's center also gives geology talks daily, on the hour, and evening campfire programs can be found at the campground amphitheater (bring a flashlight). There is a picnic area located here as well.

Weather
Although the road to Cedar Breaks is sometimes closed by heavy snows from about mid-November to late May, the park then becomes a playground for snowmobilers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Rentals are available through Blue Pine Tours at Pinewoods Resort. Because of its high elevation, freezing temperatures and snow are possible during any season at the monument. Summer temperatures range from 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, down to the 30's at night. Jackets are recommended to protect from the frequent wind.
